Solo Originals

I write songs about whatever I feel like whenever I feel like it. It's less nerdy than writing poetry.

Electromagnet (video)2010-02-22
This song is really about opening cat food, and how the lid gets suck on the can opener and gets food all over your hand. It's really a lot like OCD. Or the banality of infatuation.
Reason for the Season (video)2009-04-12
The holidays Christians celebrate are actually pagan holidays to which the church has attached various landmarks in Jesus' life. Plus, I couldn't resist pointing out that the real "Reason for the Season" is the tilt in Earth's axis of rotation. In fact, that's why Christmas falls roughly on the winter solstice, and Easter near the vernal equinox. The pagans were celebrating the beginning and end of winter.
I Can Chew (video)2008-08-17
A month after my jaw surgery, I was allowed to start eating soft foods again, like pasta and tuna sandwiches. I was so excited about it. I counted down the days and wrote this song.
Liquid Diet Blues (video)2008-07-26
On July 2, I had orthognathic jaw surgery that required me being on a liquid diet for a month. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I lost 20lbs and just had to write this song.
Eleven2007-12-08
I wrote this song for Amy for our 11th (dating) anniversary, which was actually in August, but didn't get around to recording it until now. It's relevant all year long anyway. :)
Chicken Shack (you has a flavor)2007-10-21
This song is loosely based on the Chicken Shack in Bellmead, TX, which was previously known as Leslie's Fried Chicken. We went there just about every Sunday when I was a kid, and they really did have the best fried chicken I've ever had in my life. This was recorded in GarageBand, with a built-in drum loop. The lead guitar is (as always) my Ibanez GRX-40, and this is the first song with my Ibanez GSR200BK bass guitar. You may also notice Amy singing backup.
Sittin' in a Dark Room2007-05-01
I wrote this song shortly after my mom died, as a cathartic release. I don't like to listen to it anymore. Played on my Ibanez, and recorded in Cakewalk SONAR LE.
Little Fishy2007-01-13
This song is about my honeymoon in Kauai, Hawaii. We did a lot of snorkeling. The only instrument is my Ibanez GRX-40 in drop D tuning using a brass slide.
Clouding my Mind2006-12-30
When I first wrote the music for this, the lyrics were going to be about the awful conversion of free roads to toll roads in Austin, but then when it was time to record the lyrics, I just sang this silly weather-themed love song. Drum part on the keyboard once again along with my Ibanez GRX-40.

Songs I Like

Ring of Fire2007-12-22
Written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore and made famous by Johnny Cash.

the Linguo Dead

The Linguo Dead was formed in late 2003, and went through several iterations before ending up with the quartet heard here. However, in our only live show we actually had a different bassist, because ours had plans. Heard here are me on vocals, Simon Fung on guitar, Kerry Hannan on bass, and Frank Lin on drums. I've left off the names of other band members not on these recordings for privacy's sake, but if you were part of the Linguo Dead at some point, let me know and I'll add you to this page.
